Idaho Coverage Guide

Where Can You Get Health Insurance?

Your best path depends on your household, income, employment, and when you need coverage.

01

Your Health Idaho

Idaho's official health insurance marketplace is the only place Idaho residents can qualify for an Advance Premium Tax Credit to lower monthly premiums. Compare ACA plans, estimate savings, and enroll online.

02

Employer Coverage

If your employer offers a plan, compare its employee contribution, deductible, network, and family cost. If the lowest-cost offer is considered unaffordable, you or your family may still qualify for marketplace savings.

03

Medicaid & CHIP

Adults and children who meet Idaho's eligibility rules may qualify for Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program. Applications are available year-round through Idaho Health and Welfare.

Direct & Private Plans

Some plans are purchased directly from an insurance company or through a licensed broker. These options may fit certain situations, but plans bought outside Your Health Idaho do not receive marketplace tax credits.

Premium Tax Credits

You may be able to lower your monthly premium

Eligibility is calculated from factors such as expected annual household income, household size, ages, ZIP code, and access to affordable employer coverage. The credit can be paid directly to the insurance company each month.

You must apply through Your Health Idaho to receive it. Report income or household changes promptly because the credit is reconciled on your federal tax return.

Outside Open Enrollment

Qualifying Life Events

A qualifying event may open a Special Enrollment Period. Most Idaho events allow 60 days to enroll; loss of government coverage may allow 90 days.

  • Losing employer, spouse, student, or other qualifying coverage
  • Turning 26 and aging off a parent's plan
  • Losing Medicaid or CHIP eligibility
  • Getting married or divorced with a loss of coverage
  • Having a baby, adopting, fostering, or gaining a dependent
  • Moving to Idaho or to a new coverage area within Idaho
  • An employer offer becoming unaffordable
  • Certain income, citizenship, HRA, or other special changes

Eligibility and deadlines depend on the event and supporting documents. Voluntarily dropping coverage generally does not create a Special Enrollment Period.
